Radiation of Fish

Devonian rocks have an abrupt abundance of fossil fish. A few, mostly jawless fish, are in layers below the Devonian, but both diversity and abundance are much higher in Devonian rocks.

Placoderms, extinct armored fish, are characteristic of Devonian sediments. They are now extinct.

Several types of lobe-finned fish (Class Sarcopterygii) are found in Devonian rocks, along with ray-finned fish, sharks, and armored fish. The only living lobe-finned fish are lungfish and coelacanths.

Gyroptychius
